Senior Health Update - Antipsychotic Drugs May Help with Dementia

A recent drug study holds good news for senior health, especially for elderly patients suffering from dementia. Antipsychotic drugs, usually used to treat diseases like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, are now being used to contain the symptoms of dementia.

Antipsychotic medications can help with aggression and agitation, two common symptoms of dementia. However, most studies that have researched the effects of antipsychotics on dementia patients have only followed their effects for 12 weeks.

Some experts are worried that the existing research has not explored the long-term effects of the drugs adequately. Antipsychotic drugs prescribed for dementia have serious side effects, including death in some cases.

"These drugs still do have the best evidence in terms of their effectiveness for these kinds of problems, compared to any other intervention but again, because of their serious safety concerns, you really need to weigh their risks against the benefits," Dr. Nathan Herrmann, a geriatric psychiatrist, explained.

Senior Health & Fitness Fair in Louisiana

The Senior Health and Fitness Fair will take place at the Bossier Civic Center in Louisiana on May sixth from 9 AM-3 PM this year. The fair is part of the yearly "Northwest Louisiana Senior Olympics Games" that include athletes from all parts of Louisiana and some adjoining states.

Over sixty agencies, businesses, and other organizations will set up booths at the event to disseminate information about services and products to the elderly, their loved ones, and other guests. There is no admission charge for the event, parking is complimentary, and the participating businesses will be giving away free items all day.

The complimentary event ticket will come with a registration form to enter to win one of several fabulous door prizes. The drawing for the grand door prize will occur at three o'clock for visitors who qualify.

The Fitness Fair will also have live entertainment, complimentary health screenings, and an arts and crafts area for seniors. The Senior Olympic events that will take place throughout the day include bean-bag baseball, throwing contests, darts, and dance league competitions.

Connecticut Senior Health Fair a Success

The car parking situation at High Plains Community Center left no doubt that the 6th Annual Orange Senior Health and Safety Fair was a success.

Senior Services Coordinator Joanne Byrne said the event has consistently grown with this year's hosting twenty eight vendors. This year more than two hundred fifty interested seniors attended.

Vendors from health centers, to banks, to adult day care, to realty agencies to AARP Driver safety set up tables and were eager to speak with the fairgoers.

And during the lunch waves Nick Grasso provided strolling accordion music for all the attendees.

Additionally, the Yale-New Haven mammography van was in the parking lot. Plus blood pressure screenings, benefits checkup, fitness demonstrations, Pilates and yoga demonstrations and personal safety presentations were offered. All health promoting activities for aging persons Byrne pointed out.

Health Net Medicare provided free box lunches for all the attendees, and various vendors brought door prizes which were raffled off to attendees.

"Our annual Health and Safety Fair is always an event that everyone looks forward to. It gives our residents and members a chance to learn more about the many services and programs that are available to keep them healthy and safe in their own homes," Byrne, said.

The Health Fair was coordinated by Weichert Realtors, Orange VNA, and Orange Community Services.

Pastries and coffee was provided by Laurel Estates, Assisted Living for Elders.

Senior Health Aided by Alabama Senior Rx Program

Senior Alabama residents will have the chance to take advantage of an initiative that allows them to acquire medications for some health problems.

The Northwest Alabama Council of Local Governments, and Keller Home Healthcare and Hospice, the Alabama Department of Public Health and the Alabama Department of Senior Services, are part of a twelve-month program designed to help seniors enjoy a healthier lifestyle through the Senior Rx and Wellness Program.

Janette Sutton, with NACOLG's Department of Aging Services, said, "We're trying to provide some preventative information," Sutton said. "What this is is a client self-monitoring program where program assistants go in, fill out information and let them know where they started and see where they are a few months from now to see the results in how their lifestyle has improved. We have been successful in helping get needed drugs for our clients,"

Julia Boughner, a physician with Helen Keller Hospital in Sheffield, said the hospital is one of the many places offering the wellness program.

"We've had good participation," she said. "The topics focus on several different areas, and they're very informative."

With the Senior Rx program, certain things are required to participate regarding insurance, age, prescription coverage, income and health conditions.

This is a step in the right direction for Alabama senior health.
