Supplemental Senior Health Insurance from AARP

senior health insurance

Medicare doesn't come close to covering all of seniors' health care needs, which is why most seniors choose to purchase supplemental insurance. AARP.org is an excellent site for supplemental senior health insurance referrals.

On the products portion of the AARP website, you can find information on AARP-recommended major medical and supplemental medical insurance policies. Seniors can also get information on dental insurance and long-term care insurance.

Clicking on "Medicare supplement insurance" will take you to a page where you can search for available plans. You can get quotes and general information on the health insurance policies available for seniors in your area.

To get your quotes, you will have to enter the name of your state, your ZIP code, your date of birth, and the effective date of your Medicare Part B policy. Eligible AARP members will qualify for certain discounts with United Healthcare.

Who's Better For Senior Health Insurance

senior health insurance

Let me first qualify everything I will say from this point on, I am a Democrat. I recently read that the average Baby Boomer needs to save an additional $200,000.00 over what is needed for income, for additional healthcare needs. I am a bit younger so I cannot image what I will need.

What I see as the problem for our current healthcare system is people live longer. Seniors are living well into their 70's. The system as it stands cannot handle the extended life of our seniors. If we continue with what we are doing only the wealthy will retire the rest of us will work for coverage. Medicare has gaps that seniors cannot afford. We see stories all the time about it.

The Republicans want to continue business as usual or privatize the system. We have seen where privatizing has gotten us. For many millions in the U.S. privatizing is simply eliminating retirement. The Republicans have really put no plan to fix the situation and do nothing, but use smear campaigns about socialized medicine.

I know a lot of Canadians. I grew up on the boarder and my grandmother was from Canada. I also have a fishing camp in Ontario. Last summer I had to take my father to the hospital in Perry Sound, Ontario for Bronchitis. It took 4 ½ hours in the Emergency room on a Sunday and we got excellent care. In contrast my friend from out-of-town was visiting me just last week. She received a call because her father was in the hospital for a blood clot. He sat 10 hours in the emergency for a life-treating situation. Tell me what works. One note both hospitals are about the same size and service the same size local population.

Socialized medicine does work and we all need to really take a look at our north neighbors for guidance.

Maryland Takes Huge Steps In Senior Health Insurance

senior health insurance

Senior health insurance is always a hot topic in our society. Many seniors are worried about coverage after they retire. Upon retirement, seniors move to where they feel comfortable. Some may move to warmer climates, some may move to be closer to family. A great state to think about for senior health insurance is Maryland. The Senior Health Insurance Program meets on of the most universal needs of Medicare beneficiaries, including those less than 65 years of age.

The Maryland Senior Health Insurance Program provides trained staff and volunteer counselors in all of its 24 counties. Counselors provide in-person and telephone assistance in the following general areas: Medicare prescription drug coverage plan, Medicare supplements, assistance for disabled Medicare beneficiaries, long term care insurance, medical assistance programs, billing problems, health care fraud and abuse, and free community presentations.

Those are just some of the many areas that it covers. The Maryland Department of Aging receives funding for this program from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the State of Maryland and local governments. Hopefully, more states follow in the footsteps of the Maryland government and take care of senior health insurance the way it should be taken care of.
