Qualifying for the Commonwealth Senior Health Card

Australia offers its elderly what is called a Seniors Card, but only certain seniors qualify. Your eligibility will depend on when you were born.

For example, in 2017 the qualifying age will be slowly raised to 67 from 65. Some seniors may also be eligible for a Commonwealth Senior Health Card, or CSHC.

These cards give Australian seniors certain discounts on prescription meds. The card also makes seniors eligible for government assistance with their telephone costs.

If you are considered a self-fund retiree, you will likely qualify for the CSHC. The widows of war veterans who don't already have a Pensioner Concession Card may also qualify.

Australia's Commonwealth Senior Health Card

If you are an Australian senior who does not work full time, you may qualify for the Commonwealth Senior Health Card (CSHC). Applications for the card are available at most local & state government offices, including many post offices.

The card provides eligible seniors with valuable savings on prescription drugs. Additionally, seniors who have the card can qualify for a telephone allowance, which helps pay for the cost of phone and Internet service.

In some territories, the card even entitles seniors to special discounts. Your local senior card office should have more information on participating businesses.

Many self-supporting retirees can qualify for the card. Widows of war veterans may also be eligible for the card if they do not already have a Pensioner Concession Card.
