Senior Health Issues: Exercise

senior health issues

Curves, the gym franchise for women, has recently extended a special welcome to members of the celebrated Healthways SilverSneakers Fitness Program in Indiana.

"We are so pleased to welcome local SilverSneakers members to Curves of Greencastle," commented Rhonda Louderback, Curves gym owner. "I think it is excellent for individuals who think about getting some exercise but are concerned with the cost."

Members of the SilverSneakers program who visit Curves do not have to pay an initiation fee or a monthly membership fee. In other words, they can work out at any Curves location for no out-of-pocket cost.

Seniors can participate in thirty-minute cardio regimens, weight lifting, and weight-management programs. Research has shown that seniors who participate in weight-bearing activities reduce age-related bone loss substantially.

EEOC Tackles Senior Health Issues

senior health issues

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) finally resolves at least one of the many senior health issues.

In a ruling published on December 26, 2007, in the Federal Register, the EEOC has approved employers that provide health benefits to retirees to coordinate those benefits with Medicare or comparable state health benefits and not violate the Age Discrimination in the Employment Act.

"Implementation of this rule is welcome news for America's retirees, whether young or old," commission chair Naomi C. Earp said in a statement. "By this action, the EEOC seeks to preserve and protect employer-provided retiree health benefits, which are increasingly less available and less generous."

Some maybe happy, but the AARP seems less than thrilled. "This policy is a civil rights and economic fiasco," AARP legislative policy director David Certner said in a statement. "It is a wrong-headed move to legalize discrimination, allowing employers to back off their health care commitments based on nothing more than age."

This is something we all need to watch over the next few years and see how it works.

Senior Health Issues, What are they afraid of?

Senior Health Issues

In an article in today's Washington Post, senior mental health was discussed. According to the article, the major concern of senior health issues is loss of one's faculties, or the onset of dementia. Many older Americans have been trying to keep their minds sharp by doing crosswords, learning to play and instrument or a new language. Some seniors are playing video games, anything that will keep them thinking.

In 2006 Harris Interactive for the MetLife Foundation conducted a survey of Americans 55 and older. They found that Alzheimer's is a bigger source of anxiety for Americans than heart disease, stroke and diabetes. It is now thought that an exercise regiment will also improve your memory or hold off the onset of Alzheimer's as you age. In a six-year study of over 1500 adults that was published last year, researchers found that adults that exercise 3 or more times a week were less likely to develop dementia. A similar study conducted in 2005 had the same results.
