Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Creates Elder Abuse Hotline

missouri department of health and senior services

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has created a hotline for reports of elder abuse. Residents can call in to report suspicions of physical abuse, emotional abuse, neglect or self-neglect, and financial exploitation.

The American Psychological Association has estimated that 2.1 million seniors experience some form of elder abuse every year. Most commonly, the victim is abused by a caregiver or loved one.

"It's sad, because it's usually someone close to them" who abuses the victims, explains Karen Worthington, a supervisor for Missouri's Department of Health. "That's hard, because they trust those people."

Although physical and emotional abuse of elders is commonplace, the department also receives many calls informing them of cases of self-neglect. The hotline can be reached at 1-800-392-0210.

Senior Health Issues: Exercise

senior health issues

Curves, the gym franchise for women, has recently extended a special welcome to members of the celebrated Healthways SilverSneakers Fitness Program in Indiana.

"We are so pleased to welcome local SilverSneakers members to Curves of Greencastle," commented Rhonda Louderback, Curves gym owner. "I think it is excellent for individuals who think about getting some exercise but are concerned with the cost."

Members of the SilverSneakers program who visit Curves do not have to pay an initiation fee or a monthly membership fee. In other words, they can work out at any Curves location for no out-of-pocket cost.

Seniors can participate in thirty-minute cardio regimens, weight lifting, and weight-management programs. Research has shown that seniors who participate in weight-bearing activities reduce age-related bone loss substantially.

Senior Health Care Spotlight: Macular Degeneration

senior health care

An often overlooked aspect of senior health care, age-related macular degeneraton (AMD) is the number-one cause of blindness for people over age fifty-five in the U.S. The disease afflicts more people than glaucoma and cataracts put together.

Unbeknownst to them, millions of seniors face the risk of blindness from AMD. To boost the public's awareness of the disease, February has been named the month of Age-Related Macular Degeneration Awareness.

The disease involves the gradual deterioration of the macula, which is a tiny but critical portion of the retina, or the eye's posterior inner covering. The crisp center vision necessary for endeavors like driving, reading, and knitting is made possible by the macula.

Macular degeneration may result in sudden or gradual vision loss. Risk factors include advancing age, family history, nicotine use, and high blood pressure.
