Spotlight on Senior Citizens Interests and Falling

senior citizens interests

Spotlight on Senior Citizens Interests - The fall risk among older adults is more of a problem than most people believe.

In fact, the CDC reports that 33% of seniors over the age of 65 fall every year in the U.S. Additionally, falls are the #1 cause of injury deaths for seniors.

With regard to the consequences of a senior's fall, about 20%-30% of older adults who fall suffer considerable injuries, such as contusions, pelvic fractures, or brain trauma. The medical expenses for non-fatal falls among seniors totaled to $19 billion in the year 2000.

Female seniors and the very elderly are the most susceptible to falls and fall-related deaths. Females are 67% more likely to fall than males, and 85% of fall fatalities in 2004 were among seniors age 75 and older.
