Senior Citizen Health Conditions - Brusing due to medication

senior citizen health conditionsMany senior citizens take medications and supplements to help with senior citizen health conditions. Unfortunately, some of these medications cause blood thinning that can reduce the ability for blood to clot quickly. Drugs such as aspirin and Coumadin can cause this issue. As a result, bleeding from capillary damage may take a lot long to stop or clot and this can cause blood to leak out and cause major bruising. Other medications, such as corticosteroids can cause the skin to thing and also make it easier for bruising. It is important to note that these are not reasons to stop taking the medications, but it is advice that you discuss concerns with your doctor. Always discuss the reasons for being on medications and the side effects.

Senior Health Concerns - High Blood Pressure

senior health concernsOne of the major senior health concerns is blood pressure, specifically high blood pressure, also named hypertension. When visiting a doctor, they often take your blood pressure and you here two numbers, for example 130/85. Most people do not know what these numbers mean; they inform you how hard the blood pushed against the artery walls as it flows throughout the entire body. The first number is the systolic pressure (contraction) and the lower number is the diastolic pressure (relaxation). Typically a healthy blood pressure is 120/80. Most doctors would recommend exercising, weight loss and diet change before prescribing medications to reduce high blood pressure. However, it is important, that even if put on medications that reduce hypertension, a lifestyle change must accompany it.

Senior Health Concerns - Chronic Pain

senior health concernsOne for the major senior health concerns is chronic pain such as arthritis. Many individuals who suffer from chronic pain start the day aching and have very sore joints when getting out of bed in the morning. Many times this can result in shooting pains in the back or hips. According to the American Pain Society, approximately 50 million people experience this pain day in and day out. Though chronic pain is not a normal part of the aging process it is something for concern, since individuals over the age of 60 are twice as likely to have suffering from chronic pain. Many times this pain can be masked with everyday pain killers like ibuprofen or aspirin. This pain can interfere with social life and everyday house chores. Unfortunately there is not ultimate cure for chronic pain, but it is recommended that people who do suffer from it should seek help to prevent depression which can be a side effect.
