EEOC Tackles Senior Health Issues

senior health issues

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) finally resolves at least one of the many senior health issues.

In a ruling published on December 26, 2007, in the Federal Register, the EEOC has approved employers that provide health benefits to retirees to coordinate those benefits with Medicare or comparable state health benefits and not violate the Age Discrimination in the Employment Act.

"Implementation of this rule is welcome news for America's retirees, whether young or old," commission chair Naomi C. Earp said in a statement. "By this action, the EEOC seeks to preserve and protect employer-provided retiree health benefits, which are increasingly less available and less generous."

Some maybe happy, but the AARP seems less than thrilled. "This policy is a civil rights and economic fiasco," AARP legislative policy director David Certner said in a statement. "It is a wrong-headed move to legalize discrimination, allowing employers to back off their health care commitments based on nothing more than age."

This is something we all need to watch over the next few years and see how it works.

Senior Citizen Health a New Study

Senior citizen health

In the September 12, 2006 issue of Neurology magazine they published a study the shows a link between early memory loss, to Alzheimer's.

This study states that people over 60 years of age that complain of serve memory problems may actually be suffering from brain tissue loss. These same people are able to score well on all the standard memory tests. After conducting MRI's on them it was found that they suffered from approximately 3% brain tissue loss.

Mild cognitive impairment, otherwise known as early Alzheimer's, patients suffer from approximately 4% brain tissue loss.

Both brain tissue losses are in the area which effects memory. This seems the link the two together. Senior citizen health is something to constantly be watched, so if you or anyone you know suffers from memory loss it might be time to get it checked out.

Senior Health Issues, What are they afraid of?

Senior Health Issues

In an article in today's Washington Post, senior mental health was discussed. According to the article, the major concern of senior health issues is loss of one's faculties, or the onset of dementia. Many older Americans have been trying to keep their minds sharp by doing crosswords, learning to play and instrument or a new language. Some seniors are playing video games, anything that will keep them thinking.

In 2006 Harris Interactive for the MetLife Foundation conducted a survey of Americans 55 and older. They found that Alzheimer's is a bigger source of anxiety for Americans than heart disease, stroke and diabetes. It is now thought that an exercise regiment will also improve your memory or hold off the onset of Alzheimer's as you age. In a six-year study of over 1500 adults that was published last year, researchers found that adults that exercise 3 or more times a week were less likely to develop dementia. A similar study conducted in 2005 had the same results.

Senior Health Care... Home May be the Best Medicine.

Senior Health Care

Senior Health Care is a growing concern in the United States. Home health care can become an important part of a senior's health care routine.

Studies show that people tend to recover faster from an illness in their own homes than they would in either a hospital or nursing care facility. Home health care does provide a smoother transition for a senior just out of the hospital getting back into the routine of their daily lives and can be more cost effective on their retirement budget than a nursing home. In-home caring companies offer a variety of health care services. Some of them include: skilled nursing, home care aides, therapy, medical social workers and dieticians.

It is always best to ask around for referrals when considering in home care, before hitting the yellow pages.

More Needed For Health Promotion And The Elderly!!!

health promotion and the elderly
With the first wave of baby boomers starting to sign up for Social Security benefits comes yet another reminder of the needs of America's graying population. Like no time before in American history, the concerns of older Americans are moving to the forefront as the biggest segment of the population advances in age.

One of their chief concerns, of course, is health care. Yet for the most part, it's business as usual. The failure of Congress to overhaul the Medicare health insurance program for seniors is perhaps the most glaring example. Consequently, it's being left to the states to devise new and effective ways to meet the health care needs of boomers and the elderly.

New York, to its credit, was ahead of the pack when it created a program to provide long-term care insurance to residents in 1993. Under the program, New York State Partnership for Long Term care, state residents can prepare for the possibility of needing nursing home care, home care or assisted living services and also protect some or all of their financial assets.

This program, which provides nursing home care for three years before Medicaid kicks in, is good for New Yorkers both individually and collectively. After all, New York's Medicaid program, which has a taxpayer price tag of more than $46 billion a year, is the costliest in the country. The partnership can reduce taxpayer expense by more than $10 billion a year.

The problem, however, is that not nearly enough New Yorkers are enrolled. After more than 15 years, the partnership has only 59,000 enrollees, most of whom are age 62 and older. The state currently spends only about $1.5 million to promote the program, which understandably can be a hard sell. Nevertheless, more must be done to persuade New Yorkers that long-term care insurance makes sense.
