Maryland Takes Huge Steps In Senior Health Insurance

senior health insurance

Senior health insurance is always a hot topic in our society. Many seniors are worried about coverage after they retire. Upon retirement, seniors move to where they feel comfortable. Some may move to warmer climates, some may move to be closer to family. A great state to think about for senior health insurance is Maryland. The Senior Health Insurance Program meets on of the most universal needs of Medicare beneficiaries, including those less than 65 years of age.

The Maryland Senior Health Insurance Program provides trained staff and volunteer counselors in all of its 24 counties. Counselors provide in-person and telephone assistance in the following general areas: Medicare prescription drug coverage plan, Medicare supplements, assistance for disabled Medicare beneficiaries, long term care insurance, medical assistance programs, billing problems, health care fraud and abuse, and free community presentations.

Those are just some of the many areas that it covers. The Maryland Department of Aging receives funding for this program from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the State of Maryland and local governments. Hopefully, more states follow in the footsteps of the Maryland government and take care of senior health insurance the way it should be taken care of.

Presidential Hopeful Hillary Clinton Discuss Senior Health Care

senior health care
Hillary Clinton was recently shown in a press conference discussing senior health care. She stated that the government has not kept up with the ways seniors are changing and the health care system needs to reform. Clinton stated that she wanted to allow seniors to stay in the "least restrictive" environment for long-term care, ideally in their own homes.

Clinton stressed that senior issues are not isolated but part of generational, family issues. People are living a lot longer and society needs to be more creative with its responses then in the past.

She called for major improvements in the long term care insurance industry dealing with seniors. A huge factor for senior voters is their health care. With a large percentage of voters being senior citizens, presidential candidates often target senior citizen problems. A huge topic every election year is senior health care.

With a new presidential election coming in 2008, candidates are hitting the campaign trail trying to gather as many voters as they can. Senior health care is a touchy subject because voters do not want to hear any bad news about it. They only want positive outlooks on their health care issues.

Senior Health Care Premiums to Increase for Higher Incomes

senior health care
Beginning in 2008, Medicare beneficiaries who earn more money will pay higher premiums for their Medical Part B coverage. A provision of the 2003 Medicare Modernization Act calls for a change in the formula for assessing Part B premiums.
The Part B premium has been based on Medicare covering 75% of the premium cost and the beneficiary paying for 25%. With the changes, higher income beneficiaries will pay a higher percentage of premium costs. Please pay attention for more news regarding this matter.

Senior Medical Issues Key in South Carolina

senior medical

Andre Bauer, Lt. Governor of South Carolina, which is a key Presidential Primary state, has started a campaign to encourage the candidates to talk about how they will deal with senior medical issues.

"The number of adults aged 65 and older in South Carolina and in the United States is doubling. It is time, in fact it is well past time, for the candidates who are asking for our votes to tell us how they will manage this demographic age wave and its impact on the health, independence, and quality of life of millions of people," said Bauer.

"In about 120 days the candidates will be asking South Carolina voters to set them on the path to the White House. Do they understand that more than one out of every three votes cast in South Carolina primaries last spring came from seniors?" asked Bauer.

South Carolina hosts the 1st Presidential Primaries in the South.

"For the record, and the candidates' contemplation, voters who were 65 and older accounted for 33.9% of the Republican primary ballots last spring and 31.2% of the Democratic ones," he said.

Democratic Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton recently announced the South Carolina Seniors for Hillary Committee. Ms. Clinton has said she will work to make Social Security long term without cutting benefits or increasing the age of eligibility. She fought proposals to privatize benefits.

"This isn't a new issue to Hillary," her spokesman, Zac Wright to the AP. "She's put forth an aggressive plan to protect seniors in their golden years from those who would prey on them.", which is a key Presidential Primary state, has started a campaign to encourage the candidates to talk about how they will deal with senior medical issues.

Senior Health Aided by Alabama Senior Rx Program

senior health

Senior Alabama residents will have the chance to take advantage of an initiative that allows them to acquire medications for some health problems.

The Northwest Alabama Council of Local Governments, and Keller Home Healthcare and Hospice, the Alabama Department of Public Health and the Alabama Department of Senior Services, are part of a twelve-month program designed to help seniors enjoy a healthier lifestyle through the Senior Rx and Wellness Program.

Janette Sutton, with NACOLG's Department of Aging Services, said, "We're trying to provide some preventative information," Sutton said. "What this is is a client self-monitoring program where program assistants go in, fill out information and let them know where they started and see where they are a few months from now to see the results in how their lifestyle has improved. We have been successful in helping get needed drugs for our clients,"

Julia Boughner, a physician with Helen Keller Hospital in Sheffield, said the hospital is one of the many places offering the wellness program.

"We've had good participation," she said. "The topics focus on several different areas, and they're very informative."

With the Senior Rx program, certain things are required to participate regarding insurance, age, prescription coverage, income and health conditions.

This is a step in the right direction for Alabama senior health.
