SHIP has become a popular acronym with candidates running for office. SHIP refers to the Senior Health Insurance Program. Some states are offering SHIP as a free health insurance counseling service for Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers. SHIP is sponsored by that particular state's Division of Insurance.

Many state departments have developed lists of publications and other resources to assist you in making informed health insurance decisions. You must know that SHIP is not affiliated with any insurance company. SHIP counselors do not sell or solicit any type of insurance.

Many SHIP counselors are trained to educate consumers and answer questions about Medicare, Medicare Supplement, long term care insurance, Medicare HMO's, private fee-for-service and other health insurance. They can also help you organize and assist in filing Medicare Supplement claims, and analyze Medicare Supplement and long term care policies.

For those of you that are interested in becoming part of SHIP, you must know that all coordinators and counselors must be affiliated with a sponsoring organization. If you are interested in becoming a counselor, SHIP can put you in touch with a local SHIP sponsoring organization prior to training, if available.

The coordinator is the individual responsible for the local administrative aspects of the SHIP program, including promotion SHIP services, scheduling counseling sessions, and responding to counselors' needs. This individual is usually a staff person at the sponsoring organization and acts as a "manager" for SHIP.
